The Australian sharemarket fell on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump confirmed plans to proceed with higher tariffs on key trading partners, denting hopes of a reprieve.

The S&P/ASX 200 rebounded on Monday, rising 0.5% (41.5 points) to 8,213.90, recovering from Friday’s losses despite looming US tariffs. The All Ordinaries also gained 0.5%, with eight of eleven sectors advancing. Real estate stocks led gains, while financials and defensive sectors underperformed.

The S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.1% (94.6 points) to 8,173.6 on Friday, marking its second consecutive monthly decline. The All Ordinaries dropped 1.2% as all 11 sectors traded lower, led by materials and consumer staples.

Market sentiment weakened after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed higher tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. The Australian dollar slipped toward US62¢, down 2.5% for the week, as the U.S. dollar surged.

The S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.2% (19.9 points) to 8,260.60 on Thursday, driven by strong earnings from Coles and Qantas, while a robust result from Nvidia lifted sentiment. The All Ordinaries gained 0.3%.

The S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.3% (-27.5 points) to 8,224.40 by Tuesday afternoon, dipping below its six-week closing low. The All Ordinaries Index fell 0.4%, with eight of 11 sectors in negative territory. Consumer staples and materials led declines as risk-off sentiment weighed on Australian miners.
