Methods, Not Messiahs

The Practitioner's Case Against Investing Dogma

This book started as a question I couldn't answer at my own desk: if every investing method has decades of evidence behind it, why does everyone pick one tribe and pretend the others are idiots?

Thirty years across four different trading seats gave me an answer. And it wasn't what I expected.

What This Book Is Actually About

There are plenty of investing books that tell you their method is the right one. Value investing is king. No, passive indexing. No, momentum. No, dividends. Pick your guru, buy the t-shirt, argue online.

This isn't one of those books.

Methods, Not Messiahs makes a different argument: every major investing method works. The academic evidence is there for all of them. But none of them works for everyone, all the time, in every market condition. The real skill isn't finding the "best" method. It's matching the right method to your personal situation — and having the discipline to execute it properly.

Flexibility about the menu.
Discipline about the meal.

The book introduces the Four Levers — time horizon, wealth stage, risk temperament, and life bandwidth — as the diagnostic framework for figuring out which methods actually suit you. Not which methods you wish suited you. Not which methods sound impressive at a dinner party. Which ones match the life you actually live.

Then it goes method by method — value, growth, charting, passive, active trading, income — and gives each one an honest assessment. What the evidence says. Where it works brilliantly. Where it falls apart. And who it's actually designed for.

Inside the Book

Part 1 — The Setup

Why method dogma costs more than bad stock picks. The case for honest pluralism over tribal loyalty.

Part 2 — Your Levers

The Four Levers diagnostic. How your personal circumstances determine which methods are even viable.

Part 3 — The Methods, Honestly

Six chapters, six methods. Each one assessed with the same template: evidence, strengths, failure modes, who it suits.

Part 4 — Execution

Pre-commitment, selling discipline, risk management. The stuff that actually determines whether your method produces returns or regret.

Part 5 — Context

Investor sentiment and market regimes. How to adjust your method mix when conditions change — without becoming a weather vane.

Part 6 — The Payoff

The full diagnostic, your Investment Policy Statement, and archetype profiles. The practical output that ties everything together.

The book draws on 30+ peer-reviewed studies, institutional research from SPIVA, Morningstar, Vanguard and ASIC, and six historical case studies from LTCM to the COVID crash. Every claim is backed. But it reads like a conversation, not a textbook.

About Mark Gardner

I started on the Sydney Futures Exchange floor in late 1996, five days out of school. I was seventeen. Within a week, the Asian currency crisis hit, and I learned more about markets in those first few months than most finance degrees cover in three years.

Three decades later, I've sat in four different seats: floor broker, execution trader, proprietary trader, and now adviser. Each seat teaches you something the others can't. The floor teaches speed and reading crowd psychology. Execution teaches discipline and cost management. Prop trading teaches risk — properly, the kind where your own money is on the line. And advising teaches you that the gap between what investors know and what they actually do is where almost all the damage happens.

That gap is what this book is about.

1996 — The Floor

Started on the SFE trading floor at 17. Asian currency crisis, '87 crash anniversary, physical open-outcry trading. The floor shut down in 1999 and everything went to screens.

2000s — The Desk

Execution trading, then proprietary trading. Ran my own book for roughly a decade — two losing months in that entire stretch. Lived through the GFC in real time with real positions.

2010s — The Institutions

Chairman of Genesis Trading (one of Australia's larger prop firms). Founded 42Trading (quantitative venture). Founding President of ASTA, the Australian Securities Trading Association.

2021–2023 — The Advisory Side

Head of the Investment Committee at Maqro Wealth. First time sitting on the advisory side, watching how retail and professional investors actually behave. Eye-opening.

2023–Present — MPC Markets

Founded MPC Markets. Australian equities, global equities, structured investments. The firm is built around the same philosophy as the book: match the method to the investor, not the other way around.

Why I Wrote This

There's a moment that stuck with me. Early 2000s. A trader I knew — talented, experienced — was correctly short tech stocks before the dot-com bubble burst. The thesis was right. But the timing was wrong, the position was too big, and risk limits forced him out before the crash arrived. He was right about the market and lost money anyway.

Years later I watched a client turn $100K into nearly $2 million during the mining boom, then give it all back in four months after getting greedy and abandoning every rule that got him there in the first place.

The pattern is always the same. Being right about what to buy is maybe 30% of investing. The other 70% is position sizing, sell discipline, knowing when your method is in the wrong regime, and not kidding yourself about how much bandwidth you actually have to manage the portfolio. That's what this book is really about.

I wrote it because it's the book I wish existed when I started. One that doesn't pretend there's a single correct way to invest. One that treats you like an adult who can handle honest trade-offs. And one that spends as much time on execution and discipline as it does on stock selection — because that's where the money is actually made or lost.
